Grounded was founded on the friendship between Smail and Jamal, who first met in the 1990s in their hometown of Tizi-Ouzou, Algeria. After years of pursuing individual ventures—Smail running a coffee shop and Jamal furthering his studies—the two reunited in the UK in 2012. Their shared passion for coffee inspired them to launch their first coffee roastery in 2014, igniting a dedication to crafting exceptional coffee experiences.

Be part of our growth
Grounded expanded eastward to Bow Road, converting a former bank into a lively café that honors Jamal’s connection to the area. With a second bakery in progress on-site and their sister company, Camden Coffee Roastery, providing premium coffee, Grounded continues to grow while remaining committed to quality, community, and craftsmanship.
In 2015, they opened Grounded on Whitechapel Road, blending freshly roasted coffee with delicious homemade brunch. Their roastery in Aldgate East, followed by the acquisition of an Italian restaurant and bakery next door, ensured that everything was crafted in-house.
